When it comes to investing in what to wear, there’s a simple rule to keep in mind “Cost Per Wear” (aka CPW). Take the cost of the item and divide it by the number of times it will be worn.
Cost - Leather boots $200
Wear - Predict they will be worn more than 50 times
Cost Per Wear - $4 Cost Per Wear
If that trendy piece is only going to see the light of day a couple of times, then it’s not smart to spend a ton of money on a one hit wonder. However, a coat, handbag or pair of boots that have the potential to be worn multiple times over several years are a good investment. Here’s a guide to Splurge or Save according the Smart Style Guide:
Classic Leather Riding Boots - Splurge
Always in style, these will be in for years to come. Go ahead and splurge on good quality boots that will stand the test of time.
Costume Jewelry Pieces - Save
When it comes to jewelry, only splurge if it’s real. Look for great costume jewelry pieces made with heart on Etsy.com or in your local resale shop.
Denim Flares - Save
While it’s important to splurge on a great pair of jeans, don’t waste money on the trendiest pair. Flares may be the “it” silhouette this season but come next year, they’ll be on the outs. Gap offers a variety of flares to flatter any figure at a reasonable price.
Wool Fitted Blazer – Splurge and/or Save
This is tricky. If it’s a blazer in a traditional color and pattern, designed to stand the test of time then splurge. However, if it’s a trendy color or pattern that will only be relevant one or two seasons, save your cash and hit up discount stores such as TJ Maxx or Marshalls.
