Facts on Foundation

By Style Guide Vera Sweeney

Foundation is not the solution for every skin problem you have.  You must remember that there are several different layers that make up a face.

Here are six Facts on Foundation everyone should know:

  1. Foundation Should Go Everywhere – Including Your Eyelids.
I am a sucker for the cat’s eye. I constantly take my eyeliner further and further away from my eyelash line and I found that if I put foundation on my eyes, it lasts longer and doesn’t smudge. Adding foundation to your eyelids also helps to even out your skin tone. It gives you a more unified look.

  1. Adding A Primer Is A Must.
When I was in my 20s, perhaps this wasn’t really the case. But as a woman of a certain age, I will tell you that adding primer to my face BEFORE applying my foundation sets my face and helps my makeup last longer. This is a HUGE takeaway – purchase a primer like this one from Laura Mercier – and rest easy knowing your fine lines will have more coverage for a longer period of time.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid To Get Messy.
If I told you that I didn’t use a sponge to apply my foundation, would you think I was crazy? The best way to get into every area of your face is to use your fingers. This will ensure the creases of your nose, eyes and the top of your forehead will be completely covered.

  1. Looking For Light Coverage? Consider Tinted Moisturizer.
Maybe you are one of those women that don’t need a lot of coverage. Well… lucky you! I’m not bitter I swear. J In all seriousness, if you are really just looking for a bit of coverage, you don’t have to commit to a full foundation. Opt for a tinted moisturizer instead – like this one from Physician’s Formula – which also includes SPF 15.

  1. Ready To Set Your Look? Opt For Translucent Powder.
It’s like hairspray for the face! Translucent powder will help minimize oily breakouts and give your skin a soft finish. The product will also not add any additional color to your skin. So, if you’ve contoured your cheeks with bronzer, you don’t have to worry about messing up your look. Control shine, set your makeup, and spend less time fussing with your face throughout the day.

  1. Don’t Forget To Change Your Foundation Often.
Your skin changes throughout the year. Your skin needs more moisture during the colder months and you will need more help with shine in the summer. Be conscious of what your skin is telling you and adjust accordingly.
